Final Week: 1920s Modernism in Montreal: The Beaver Hall Group

Release Date: Thursday, September 29, 2016

After a summer of fabulous visitor response to the award-winning exhibition and accompanying book, the Art Gallery of Windsor’s 1920s Modernism in Montreal: The Beaver Hall Group is in its final week. The last day is Sunday, October 2, and the Gallery has planned a number of exciting events to celebrate the cultural impact of the Beaver Hall Group on Windsor and on Canada as a whole.

From Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 2, admission to the Art Gallery of Windsor will be free as part of the province-wide initiative, Culture Days. Culture Days aims to raise awareness and accessibility for arts and culture in Canadian communities. This event presents itself as the perfect opportunity to enjoy the final days of the Beaver Hall Group exhibition, so don’t miss out! Donations are gratefully received in lieu of admissions.

The Beaver Hall Group’s era was strongly influenced by the music, dance, theatre and arts in Montreal’s modern urban landscape. Inspired by this particular cultural moment, the Art Gallery of Windsor is pleased to partner with the University of Windsor’s (UWindsor) Jazz Combo to present a concert with complimentary admission into the blockbuster exhibition. Gallery visitors will have the chance to partake in a final tour of the Beaver Hall Group exhibition on Sunday, October 2 at 2pm. Before the concert, patrons will have a chance to bear witness to how the bold and bright colours of the artists’ portraits and landscapes reflect the free forms of jazz music.

As a special treat, this tour includes a presentation by the School of Dramatic Arts. Four student performers will re-enact a dramatic scene from the play, Picturesque, that honors the ingenuity of the women artists of the Beaver Hall Group. There will be performances every half hour beginning at noon until 2pm.

To finish off this fantastic weekend, The Beaver Hall Group inspired concert, presented in partnership with the UWindsor Jazz Combo, will take place on Sunday, October 2 at 3pm at the newly renovated UWindsor School of Social Work, located at 167 Ferry Street. Tickets for the Jazz Concert are available for $20 for adults, or $10 for students (with ID) and AGW members. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Gallery or by calling Visitor Services at 519-977-0013 ext. 117.

More information can be found by visiting the Gallery’s website at www.agw.ca.
