Andy Warhol: Printed Food Matter

June 1 – September 30, 2018

In Andy Warhol: Printed Food Matter, iconic American Pop artist Andy Warhol’s  prints of fruit, beef, fish, and soda labels from the 1970s and 1980s offer an important framework for new conversations surrounding the social and political impacts of food in contemporary art. In the first solo presentation of Warhol’s work at the AGW, food becomes a metaphor through which to challenge how people eat food, experience food, and participate in food culture.
Drawing from techniques of mono printing and silk screening learned while studying commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Warhol developed sophisticated processes of printmaking to challenge 1960’s social hierarchies.
