Final Month of 1920s Modernism in Montreal: The Beaver Hall Group Exhibition

1920s Modernism in Montreal: The Beaver Hall Group, the acclaimed exhibition at the Art Gallery of Windsor, is in its final month. Ending on October 2, the blockbuster exposition takes visitors back to an era that shaped Canadian art and identity. It also bears witness to the talent of the group’s female members, who defied social obstacles to exhibit their artwork during the Roaring Twenties, irrevocably changing Montreal’s art scene. Bold and bright colours feature in the striking portraits of men and women that give a humanized perspective into a life profoundly impacted by war and jazz music.
The Beaver Hall Group, comprised of some 20 artists and their closest colleagues, was initially considered to be a Montreal counterpart to Toronto’s Group of Seven. Notable artists include
A.Y. Jackson (The Group’s first president), Mabel May, Anne Savage, Edwin Holgate, Prudence Heward, and Adrien Hébert, to name just a few.
The Beaver Hall Group exhibition has already enjoyed massive success in Hamilton and Montreal, drawing over 100,000 visitors excited to admire over 140 works of Canadian art. The exposition was also recognized with the Award of Excellence from the Canadian Museums Association.
October 2 also marks the end of a complementary exhibition from the Gallery’s collection featuring the Group of Seven. Those interested are encouraged to visit the Gallery and take in these incredible selections of Canadian artwork over the next four weeks.

About the Beaver Hall Exhibition
The touring exhibition 1920s Modernism in Montreal: The Beaver Hall Group is organized and circulated by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Funded in part by the government of Canada the project features exceptional women who, in the 1920s, were the first in Canadian history to join an association of professional artists - a seminal moment in the assertion of women as professional painters in Montreal, Quebec and Canada. After its run at the Art Gallery of Windsor the exhibition will appear at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary from October 2016 to January 2017.
