Stone Ritual by Bryan Howard, 2022
Artwork by Ainslee Winter, 2022
Rituals come in many shapes and forms and have been practiced by humans for centuries. Rituals help us to find meaning through small actions backed by the power of awareness and intention. Ritual and art-making are very interconnected. Using the power of our intuition, we are guided and led to create rituals. This is made possible with the support of art making tools and processes as a foundation. The symbolic nature of art and ritual provides a sacred container to explore how it can provide healing on many levels.
Rituals are unique to each person - and are guided from deep within the soul. Join us this session to participate in a stone ritual. This process is used to help relieve any heaviness, challenge, or sorrows we may be holding onto, and transform it through a series of small actions.
We will have the opportunity to respond to the ritual through the art making process. Or perhaps, this will inspire you to create your own rituals to practice in your daily life!
Suggested Materials:
- Sketchbook/Paper
- Mark-making tool: Pencil, markers, etc.
- Large bowl of water
- Small stones (able to fit easily in the palm of your hand).
- Plant
- Optional: Found objects, natural materials, etc.
*If you do not have these items, no need to worry! We can work with whatever materials you have at home or are inclined to use!
“The sea is really just drops of water that have come together.” - Desmond Tutu
Mindfulness Check-In
- Gather your materials.
- Mindfully create a shrine with the bowl of water at its centre.
- Before placing your stones in your shrine, hold them in the palm of your hands. Notice the weight, the temperature, the texture, the colour.
- Become mindful of the placement of objects. Did you create a pattern? What materials did you use? What do the rocks symbolize?
- You may want to surround your bowl with a collection of stones.
- Reflect on some of the rituals that you incorporate into your daily life. What rituals or routines do you follow or practice? How do they support your well-being?
Art-Making
- Reflect on the Stone Ritual. How was the process for you?
- Create artwork as a response to your experience in the Stone Ritual.
- Cyclical nature: The natural elements & their roles, focusing on repetition, shapes, & patterns.
- Tapping into your own intuition, create or participate in a ritual you feel called to right now.
- *Focus on process-based art, where your intuition guides you. With this approach, you become a necessary and needed part of the journey!
